Hey Kristin. It all depends on the reader. If your daughter is a "high" reader for 3rd grade, she could probably swing it. I definitely had a handful of students in 3rd grade who would have been able to read and enjoy this book, but it's above grade level for sure. You could read it yourself - probably in one sitting - or you could compare it to the books that she is already reading and enjoying to see if the vocab, type, sentence structure, etc look comparable. Does your daughter reader books by Jerry Spinelli? Louis Sachar? The 'Dear America' series? I don't actually have the book levels in front of me, but those might prove to be decent benchmarks.

Thanks for checking out the review. If your daughter (or you) likes this book, there is a sequel that I've not yet read that I also plan on checking out. Best wishes!

This sounds great, thanks for the rec! Wondering if it would be good for my rising 4th-grader, so I'll just have to read myself first to make sure....

Hi Verna,

Thanks so much for the note and for checking out my blog. I have to admit that when I participated in the reading deprivation, I was freelancing as an editor on resource material for teachers. So, I couldn't really duck out of reading all together, either. But, I did cut out all the reading for pleasure which was a LOT and it made a big difference. My theory is that it's the fiction reading that populated my creative mind, not the "work" reading as much.

Also, when you were reading through your daughters' babyhoods your reading list was a lot more high-brow than mine! I should take a page from your book, so to speak.

Best wishes!

Hi Shannon! I found you on Flashlight Worthy, and I love reading your blogs (I've read 3 now, and I just found you 15 minutes ago). I read The Artist's Way about 15 years ago, and I couldn't try the week without reading. Well, for one thing I was a technical writer at Apple, and I don't think my manager would have understood that I couldn't read the test notes for the prototype i-Gizmo because I was giving up reading. But I don't think I could have done it anyway. Like you, I read my way through my daughters' babyhoods, with baby in my arms, a bottle of formula tucked under my chin to keep it falling out of baby's mouth, and a book open in my hands: all of Leon Uris, Herman Wouk, Norman Mailer and Philip Roth and John Updike (those were my pre-feminist days). I love your point in this post about creating space for your own imagination. Seems like that should be a given, but I know it's not.

I'm happy to have found your blog and will visit often.
